Asking a girl out who is recently broken up with her boyfriend can be tricky. She might still love her boyfriend or be on the rebound looking for something new.She could be an emotional wreck, depending on how long it has been since she and her ex split. In some cases, you might be better off sitting back and allow her time to recover; other times, you can be that shoulder to cry on before making your move.

Last night, as I was making the world's most delicious and least healthy macaroni and cheese (I use City Bakery's recipe, available here), and casually reading about Erin wanting to touch guys' butts, I got to thinking about my new single life and (pounds of carbs and cheese aside) if I'm taking any new approaches to it. Miss Canada and I are still talking and still part of each other's lives, and for that reason, among others, the details need to stay between us for the moment.

But save it to say that long distance is a challenge, and there were no betrayals or similar dramathamatics; we were honest and communicative with each other about where we were and where we thought it could go.

I concluded my 30th bday invite with the sentence, "Presence trumps Presents," because it was more important to me that people "bring it" than bring gifts. Something I've noticed in my last relationship was how much attention I paid to my Black Berry. They're part of my every week (if not every day), so introducing a significant other to them, or involving her in our activities has been no big deal for me.

Be yourself and show her what a great time she can have with you. Chances are, if she likes you, she'll let you know.

Follow the date with a quick e-mail or text message saying you had a good time and that you'll talk soon.

Find an activity that you both enjoy and, three days after the date, ask her to join you for another date doing what you both like.

Switch gears with dates so you don't fall into the mundane.

If she says "yes," then you know she's willing to spend time with you. If she steps away, then she might not be interested.

Look for signs she might see you as a platonic date. However, if she stands her ground or takes a step towards you, she probably likes you. After your platonic date, say something like, "I'd like to go on a date with you, if you'd like to join me..." This is kind of funny and if she has any humor at all, she'll smile or laugh, which is the key to a woman's heart.
